Orange Spice Syrup
Makes a scant 1/2 cup

Stored in a sealed jar in the refrigerator, this syrup will keep for up to 2 weeks. You can strain the syrup after it’s cooked, but leaving in the aromatics will intensify the flavor over time.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 strips orange zest
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 star anise
Method
Combine sugar, 1/2 cup water, orange zest, cinnamon stick and star anise in a small, heavy saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar has completely dissolved, then simmer for 5 minutes more. Remove from heat and cool.
If desired, strain syrup through a fine-mesh strainer, discarding solids.
Syrup will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
