Carrot-Oat Dog Treats

Baking homemade dog treats is a simple way to pamper your pet nutritiously. Experiment with herbs to suit your pup’s preference, though we like parsley for its breath-freshening properties. A quick honey glaze makes these treats even more irresistible for your canine friends.

Method

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, combine flaxseed with 3 tablespoons water, stir the mixture and let sit for 5 minutes.

In a medium bowl, combine carrots, flour, parsley, applesauce and flaxseed mixture and stir until mixture resembles a wet dough. (If shredding your own carrots, you may need about 1/2 cup more flour to help the mixture bind together.)

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to 1/4-inch thickness.

Cut into 12 square-shaped cookies or use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Place on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake until treats are completely hard, about 1 hour.

Remove from the oven and brush with honey.

Return to the oven and bake for 5 minutes more. Let cool completely, then store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
