Red Cabbage and German Sausage

Ingredients

    1/3 cupcanola oil
    4 tablespoonssugar
    1 mediumyellow onion, diced
    3 clovesgarlic, chopped
    1/3 cupred wine vinegar
    1/2 cupchicken broth
    1head red cabbage, sliced and cored
    2 mediumFuji or Gala apples, peeled, sliced and seeded
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 teaspooncaraway seeds
    4whole cloves
    1/2 teaspoonground black pepper
    1 poundyour favorite variety of The Original Brat Hans Authentic German Sausage

Method

Preheat the oven to 350°F. 


Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large pot. 


Add sugar and cook until golden, about 8 minutes. 


Carefully (sugar is very hot!) add onions and cook 5 to 10 minutes or until well browned. 


Add garlic, cook 2 more minutes. 


Add vinegar and stir, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the pan.


Add chicken broth, cabbage, apples, lemon juice, caraway seeds, cloves and black pepper. 


Cover and cook until cabbage is tender, about 35 minutes. 


Serve with sausage prepared according to package directions.


Arrange sausage on a foil-lined baking sheet and bake until golden brown and cooked through, about 15 minutes. 


Serve with cabbage.
