Sweet Vanilla Biscuits

The flavor and aroma of vanilla permeate these tender biscuits, perfect for a sweet breakfast pastry or afternoon treat, or as the base for a dessert filled with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
Method
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, stir together sugar and vanilla until completely moistened.
Add flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and whisk until evenly blended.
Cut in butter with a pastry blender or 2 table knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in buttermilk just until a dough forms.
On a lightly floured work surface, pat dough together and flatten into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
Cut into 12 squares and place about 1 1/2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake until golden brown, 15 to 17 minutes. Cool slightly before serving.
